PRINCE GEORGE – Small business makes up the vast amount of all businesses in bc and it has been small business bearing the brunt of the economic turmoil created by the pandemic. Restaurants and retailers were closed for months. Businesses began to re-open their doors in small ways this summer the Prince George Chamber of Commerce has struck a Community Recovery Task Force.

“The Chamber has really committed to looking forward to that economic recovery,” explains Kiel Giddens, President for the Chamber Board of Directors. “Obviously last year, we focussed with our partners on things like the Support PG campaign but we need to look to the long term economic recovery of Prince George this region.”

The same Board approved the mandate of the Task Force:

a) Advocate with senior levels of government for remedies to ease the economic burdens created by the COVID-19 pandemic;

b) Disseminate information and educate the Prince George community on resources and programs available to support business and community resiliency;

c) Work in consultation and collaboration with stakeholders to identify new initiatives to achieve economic recovery for businesses, workers and service providers

d) Develop strategies to align the needs of business with senior levels of government and policy makers.

A number of organizations are represented on that task force, with members of Council and the City recently added. And with the last of the players in place, Giddens says it’s time to get to work.

“We’re looking to set the first meeting at the end of this month,” he says. “Really those partners will have the ability to feed into the draft terms of reference that we out now. And we want to have this as a continuous emphasis this year to really get some momentum on economic recovery in 2021 and let’s put the pandemic behind us.”

The Task Force will remain in place for the duration of the pandemic.
