McLeod Lake — The McLeod Lake Indian Band has declared a COVID-19 outbreak on IR#1.

In a letter published on the band’s website, Chief Harley Chingee confirms that three elders currently have the virus, one of whom is in intensive care, one who is being monitored at the hospital and one who is currently isolating at home.

Sadly, Chief Chingee also confirmed that elder Sheri Solanas has passed away due to complications related to the virus.

In light of the outbreak, he says “there is not a more important time than to stay within your immediate family household bubble” while encouraging everyone to stay in contact instead via phone or the computer.

In addition to that, lockdown measures have been put in place to protect community members, including the closure of the MLIB offices and a mandatory stay-at-home order.

Band members with doctor appointments are asked to contact Kim Harmison at 778-363-1227.

Chief Chingee also warns that members who refuse to comply with the current stay-at-home orders risk not being allowed back into the Reserve for the remainder of the lockdown and/or having distributions withheld.

Members who require immediate assistance are asked to contact the Health Team at 250-851-5172 or 778-764-5781.
