Some great news for the town of Fort Nelson, as of February 18th central mountain air is set to return to the skies.

This comes at an important time, as vital services keep the rural town connected to cities like Prince George.

Pre -Covid, Central Mountain air had six flights in and out of Fort Nelson which brought in health care professionals and camp workers.

However, when covid hit, travel was discouraged and bookings dropped along with dollars, which eventually forced them to cancel altogether. Gary Foster, who is the Mayor of Fort Nelson Says, this put the community in a very difficult situation

“This is important because it’s bringing in health care professionals in like chiropractors, optometrists, dentists and it’s also taking people out to our nearest regional hospital Prince George. Which is 9 hours away by road for things like cancer care, operations So, without that regional carrier, were put in a very, very difficult position ”

With a little teamwork and elbow grease, the regional Governments and the mayor were able to quickly come to an agreement. Now, CMA is able to resume flights.

A statement sent to CKPG by Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure says:

“We understand the tough decisions airlines are facing due to continuing border closures and recommendations against non-essential travel. Our government is continuing to work with municipalities to ensure they have adequate transport options for essential goods into their communities during the pandemic.”

A sign of relief for everyone in the little Northern Rockies town.

” You know we’re not talking about people, who want to go on vacation to a tropical location, these are these flights and this transportation is necessary to travel. ” ~ Mayor Foster

In a statement found on their website, CMA says, they are excited to continue operations with the Government’s Help;

” Central Mountain Air applauds regional government officials and the Fort Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce for advocating so strongly for this vital connectivity. The result has been that the BC provincial and Federal Governments worked through an approach to enable Central Mountain Air to continue to provide essential air service connectivity to Fort Nelson.”

All in all, it’s a big win for the Northern community, with flights resuming on February 18th, with a plan to grow frequency with more favorable travel guidelines and demand.
