Northern Caps pushing for more entries as Kraft Hockeyville nomination phase enters final week

PRINCE GEORGE – The Northern Capitals are looking to capture the national eye.

A year after participating in the first-ever female midget outdoor game in Canada, the organization is now submitting its nomination for the 2021 Kraft Hockeyville Challenge. If successful, it will bring $250,000 worth of improvements to Ernie Sam Memorial Arena in Fort St. James and the right for the region to host an NHL preseason game.

“We had our BC Winter Classic last year, second annual and the first time for women’s hockey in Canada. We were hashtagging Kraft Hockeyville hoping to catch their eye,” explained Media Relations Director for Cariboo Hockey, Caleb Wilson.

$250,000 would certainly go a long way for the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena.

“Upgrades to the roof are needed. We’d love to upgrade the lights for in the evening for usages throughout the week and of course our games. All in all, $250,000 goes a long way for a community like that, especially for an outdoor facility.”

The Northern Capitals, along with the rest of Cariboo Hockey, plan to have extensive use of this facility in the future, with their own expectation that the Winter Classic be a staple for Northern BC hockey for years to come.

“Whether or not we make it, we will be planning Winter Classics for the years to come. It’s something they (the players) all talk about now at a younger age. Everyone wants that opportunity.”

With less than a week to go in the nomination period ahead of the judging period, the Northern Capitals are hoping the community continues to rally behind them with the Caps currently sitting at over 220 submissions thus far.

“If you have the chance to make a post on the Kraft Hockeyville website, you can search Ernie Sam Memorial Arena,” said Wilson. “But if you’ve never gone to a Winter Classic, you can like up to 15 posts and every like helps. It gets us that much further for engagement.”

The nomination round closes on February 14 with the judging of communities going from Feb. 15 to Mar. 19.
