Camping season is just around the corner and so is your chance to register early.

Prince George – With the official start of camping season just around the corner, B.C. residents can soon start planning with the reservation of campsites. And, British Columbians will have the first crack at the prime spots.

The discover camping registration service opens up on March 8th, which gives B.C. residents the opportunity to book now and up to two months in advance.

B.C. folks will have top priority access to those sweet spots throughout the summer. Clint Fraser, Chief Executive Officer for the Northern Tourism BC board says this is great news as it will give folks time to plan ahead, while we still deal with the pandemic.

“Camping is certainly a big part of life for locals and visitors of northern bc, and you know I think there will be more of a pent-up demand in accessing the outdoors and camping experiences.”

Since COVID-19 is still impacting the province and travel opportunities are limited, this year’s camping season is expected to be a busy one.

George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy released a statement Wednesday, which reads

“We are asking people to pick a campground as close to home as possible to avoid long road trips and non-essential travel.”

B.C. parks receive more than 23-million visits each year – Fraser encourages folks to take advantage of the reservation system.

“I think we are looking at an expectation that people are really looking to access you know, more outdoor experiences and certainly with moving to places with less population and getting into those areas. You know northern bc, there is a lot of great camping experiences and opportunities”

So with that note, it’s important to be prepared with backup options for preferred sites and dates.

“So really the ability to plan ahead throughout the reservation system, you know I think is certainly encouraged and it’s great that they are getting a bit of a jump on opening it up.”

Prior to the general opening on March 8, backcountry camping reservations will open on March 1. Also, to be noted, reservations for out-of-province camping will be open this year, however, that won’t come into effect until July 8th.
