Prince George – The province introduced new legislation (Firearm Violence Prevention Act )that will try and reduce shootings connected to gangs and drugs in B.C. This will also partly focuses on the transportation of illegal firearms.

B.C. residents continue to experience troubling and highly dangerous incidents of firearms violence that have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, including right here in Prince George.

On Wednesday Solicitor General Mike Farnworth introduced the Firearm prevention act into legislation.

” There is a number of gaps that existed here in B.C. that this legislation is intended to fill.”

Mike Morris MLA for – Prince George – Mackenzie says these are steps in the right direction, especially for our area.

” Gun violence is prevalent in Prince George as it is in the lower mainland and throughout the province, this just gives police added powers.”

These Items included a series of measures to prevent gang violence in the province, including penalties for people transporting illegal guns and ending the sale of imitation firearms, like Airsoft and pellet guns, to youth. If the bill is passed, it will introduce measures such as:

“What this does, is it gives the police the added powers in British Columbia to seize and impound vehicles that are found to be transporting illegal guns?”

Where before, gang members pulled over would just claim ignorance:

” Which made it very much impossible to prosecute a lot of those offenses, so the police now have the authority to seize the vehicle, seize the weapon and do a further investigation as a result of that. They are also going to pay closer attention to who is using a lot of the gun ranges that we have throughout the province.”

However, there is still work to be done with this bill and Morris intends to bring this up in future readings

“The real nuts and bolts of this will be revealed at the community stage, the third reading stage. And that’s where I am going to look at it section by section and there is a couple of areas in there that I want to have clarified by the minister. We will see what is revealed during that process.”
