PRINCE GEORGE — It seems that many motorists are still not understanding the dangers of distracted driving.

A partnership between the Prince George RCMP Traffic Services and Prince George Commercial Vehicle and Enforcement (CVSE) last Wednesday over an eight-hour period led to 28 tickets for using electronic devices.

RCMP say enforcement took place at locations throughout the city.

Here are the statistics below:

Prince George Traffic Services:

  • Serve driving prohibition: 1
  • Excessive speed impoundments: 2
  • Speeding tickets: 7
  • Speed in school zone: 1
  • Failure to wear seatbelt: 1
  • Failure to slow down and move over: 1
  • Using electronic devices: 14
  • Illegal plate tickets: 2
  • Notice and order for tinted windows: 2

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement:

  • Using electronic devices: 14
  • Failure to slow down and move over: 2
  • Disobey traffic control: 1
  • Speeding ticket: 1
  • Notice and order for tinted windows: 1
  • Notice and order for illegal emission modifications: 1

“Drivers should be aware that even though they don’t see us while they are using their phones and driving, we see them. The 28 tickets we handed out for using an electronic device makes this very apparent,” says Sgt. Kyle Ushock, head of the Prince George Traffic Services Unit.

March is distracted driving month and police say motorists can expect to see traffic enforcement throughout the month.

RCMP say distracted driving includes using an electronic device, personal grooming, eating/drinking, reading, pets, other passengers and not knowing your route.
