VICTORIA —Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 1,462 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia over the weekend.

That brings the total number of people with the virus since the pandemic began in B.C. to 84,569. She says 78,237 of those people have recovered.

Here’s the regional breakdown on cases over the weekend:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 407
  • Fraser Health: 802
  • Island Health: 72
  • Interior Health: 79
  • Northern Health: 102

Henry says there are 4,854 active cases of the virus, 240 people are in hospital, 66 of whom are in intensive or critical care.

Sadly there have been 11 more deaths bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,391.

Henry says there have been 144 more cases of COVID-19 variants bringing the total number in B.C. to 394. She says 87 of those cases are active. The majority of the cases, 363, are the U.K. variant, while 31 cases are the variant from South Africa.

On a positive note, she says 333,327 people have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 86,925 of which are second doses.

Henry also commented on the rush to book COVID-19 vaccination appointments as today is the first day people aged 90 and over and Indigenous people aged 65 and over can call in to book their appointments starting next Monday. As of mid-morning, call centres had already received 1.7 million calls province-wide.

“We ask everyone to be patient and wait your turn,” says Henry. “It won’t speed up your turn.”
