Kidney health awareness pushed in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — It’s World Kidney Day on Thursday and Canada’s Kidney Foundation is attempting to raise awareness for kidney health and kidney disease across Canada.

This comes as the ratio of one in ten Canadians being affected by kidney disease is on the rise, and eighty per cent of kidney function can be gone before individuals recognize it.

“Kidney disease is a silent disease, unfortunately, kidneys filter your blood to remove any toxins from it, and with kidney disease there are no physical symptoms,” says Paul Ravelle, president of the Prince George Kidney Foundation.

Ravelle says a simple blood test, called the G.F.R test can help individuals determine whether their kidneys are healthy.

“With the G.F.R test, anything over sixty is a good healthy kidney, forty-sixty you are in a range that needs to be evaluated,” says Ravelle.

However, the Kidney Foundation is seeing more than regular donations.

“Unfortunately a by-product of the 2020 opioid crisis, at least here in B.C. more people are getting transplants, which is one good benefit, ” says Ravelle.

But Ravelle adds the Kidney Foundation requires more donations, as eighty per cent of individuals are on the waitlist for a kidney transplant.

Individuals are encouraged to attend a three day webinar, that starts Thursday, on the kidney.ca website, to learn more about the disease, and see what can be done to help.
