Cousins ready for opportunity with Rockets

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been a surreal experience for 17-year-old Scott Cousins. Having signed with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets and then a short-time later news breaking the BC Division will go ahead with a season come March 26th, the product of Prince George is ready to go.

“I’ve been looking to it. Obviously, it’s a bit weird with the way things are setup and all that.”

This all comes a year removed from a season Cousins exploded in the U16 ranks after going undrafted in the WHL Draft, scoring 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 total points in a 28-game season with the Cariboo Cougars Minor Midget squad, eventually being named BC U16 Player of the Year.

“Playing minor midget last year and then not really have a major midget season here, it’s going to be a really big step up with the speed, strength, and size of the guys, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Entering his mandatory self-quarantine over the weekend, Cousins has spent the time to get engaged with his new teammates through virtual workouts, all while embracing the privileges that come with being a Major Junior hockey player.

“It’s pretty surreal, honestly. It’s something I’ve been building towards for as long as I can really remember, probably since I went and saw my first Cougars game.”

Due to the conditions of this season, Cousins and the Rockets will be playing host to the other BC Division teams as their one of two hub centres, ultimately meaning his family and friends won’t be able to see Cousins play live.

“It’s bittersweet I guess just knowing there’s not going to be any fans and my parents aren’t going to be able to come to watch. They’ve all been positive and they’re all so happy for me. I’ve been working hard for this and they’ve been working just as hard as me to see this happen.”

Cousins and his fellow teammates will converge on Kelowna’s hub later this week before taking to the ice on March 26th with their season opener against the Victoria Royals.
