‘We cannot blow this now’: BC changes health restrictions around dining, religious services, and more

PRINCE GEORGE – The province has changed a number of COVID-19 restrictions to accommodate for increasing concern in cases according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

New restrictions include:

  • No indoor dining at restaurants, pubs, or bars, only outdoor dining or take-out is allowed
  • Recently approved indoor religious gatherings are now banned, limited outdoor gatherings allowed to continue
  • Indoor adult group fitness classes banned, now restricted to individual or one-on-one only
  • Travel continues to be limited to essential travel, work or medical reasons only.
  • Face masks will be required for those in Grade Four and above in schools across the province

These restrictions will be in effect until at least April 19th, a three-week period.

The restrictions around dining will come into effect at midnight on Monday.

“Our goal throughout the pandemic has been to find our balance,” says Dr. Henry. “Our balance is now off.”

Gathering indoors is the greatest risk for continued transmission according to health officials.

“We cannot blow this now,” says Premier John Horgan.

Horgan called out the 20-39-year-old age group for being the main driver of case transmission in the recent weeks.

Horgan also noted that there will be supports to ‘bridge’ these three weeks for the hospitality sector.

The Premier noted the eviction restrictions, and the COVID-19 benefit, but could not explain any new measures to assist those who work in the hospitality industry, saying he would have more soon.

These announcements come as BC Health Officials report 2,518 new cases of the virus over the weekend, including 121 in the Northern Health region.
