Olive’s Branch celebrating second birthday with great success

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s a transformed motel on the edge of downtown Prince George, and thanks to the Association Advocating for Women and Community (AWAC) the past two years have been filled with success.

“I see miracles happen every day here,” says Blythe Roller, Program Manager at Olive’s Branch.

Olive’s Branch opened in 2019, after receiving a unanimous vote from city council to go ahead with an idea and a plan for positive change.

The facility is based on rehabilitation with a 12-step process filled with life skills, meetings, and active discussion.

Identifying your problems and talking about them openly is just one of the many focuses as part of the 28 room centre on 3rd Avenue.

“We had no idea what we were doing but we knew it was so needed in the community, so I have to say that first year was a lot of learning,” says Connie Abe, Executive Director of A.W.A.C.

The centre does a lot for those battling addiction to alcohol and drugs, providing a safe space to eliminate cravings away from environments that could’ve encouraged it.

The programs running at Olive’s Branch are part of a three-year maximum stay, although the door is always open for those who need help to get it.

Staff say that those who need help don’t always use the whole three-year window, many take the time they need and then walk out the door a changed person in a lot shorter time.

All in all, at Olive’s Branch it’s the opposite of a one-size-fits-all approach, those who work at the facility work very hard to meet the needs of residents on an individual basis.

This is only part one of the CKPG News coverage of Olive’s Branch, Thursday, April 1st will feature the faces of those who are changing thanks to the facility.
