KAMLOOPS, BC – The floodgates opened up for the Kamloops Blazers in the second period, scoring four goals, as they took down the Prince George Cougars 6-1 Thursday night.

Kamloops keeps their record unblemished through three games while the Cougars fall to 1-2. Both losses have been to the Blazers.

Thursday’s game was originally scheduled to be played Sunday, April 4th. The Western Hockey League announced changes to the schedule because of the situation involving positive cases of COVID-19 in the Kelowna Rockets team cohort. The Blazers game against Victoria originally scheduled for Thursday in Kelowna was postponed.

Mats Lindgren broke the ice on the scoreboard to put the Blazers ahead 1-0 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the opening period. Nestling himself between the circles, the product of North Vancouver went blocker-side of Gauthier to hit twine. The tally was Lindgren’s first in the WHL.

While the day read April 1st on the calendar, the Cougars didn’t think there was such thing as an April Fools gift. That was until Dylan Garand misplayed the puck several feet outside of his net as the puck then slid past and into the net. Captain Jack Sander got credit for the unassisted goal, bringing the game back to even.

The game would stand still at 1-1 into the 1st intermission.

Kamloops came into the 2nd period running on all cylinders with intentions of lighting the lamp. And that they did.

45 second into the period, Calgary Flames’ prospect Connor Zary managed to draw Gauthier away from his crease before finding Matthew Seminoff for the open look goal.

A few minutes later, the Blazers found themselves on the powerplay after Ethan Samson was called on a slashing penalty. Kamloops found themselves with a buffer as Caedan Bankier came up with his 2nd goal of the season, 3-1 for the Blazers.

In the final two minutes of the middle frame, the scoring tear continued for the Blazers. First, Tye Spencer scored to extend his team’s lead by three. 15 seconds later, Zary tallied his second of the season to push the scoreboard to 5-1.

In the third period, Prince George’s Craig Armstrong was sent to the dressing room after connecting knee on knee with Fraser Minten. Minten struggled to get back to his team’s bench following the collision as Armstrong was served a five minute major for kneeing, along with a game misconduct for the hit.

Seminoff scored his second of the game with 24 seconds remaining to wrap up the scoring for the night as the Blazers left the ice with a 6-1 win.

The Cougars struggled in getting any offensive presence orchestrated as Prince George was only able to register three shots on net in the third period.

Shot totals finished heavily in favour of Kamloops as they put 42 shots on Gauthier. Garand faced 26.

As tough as the turnout was, there was an upside to Thursday’s game. By its conclusion, the Cougars had managed to come away with 61 per cent of the faceoff battles.

As it stands, Prince George will be off until Tuesday when they step back onto the ice against the Victoria Royals at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.

There remains no further word on if the league will be making any additional changes to the BC Division schedule following the suspension of team activities for the Kelowna Rockets.
