Prince George – “9-1-1 emergency, what community are you calling from.”

That’s the calm voice you here on the phone when you’re in a scary situation. Often 9-1-1 dispatchers are the first, first responders.

“It’s 911 awareness week, nationally it’s called National Telecommunications Week, but here in B.C. it’s to celebrate the more invisible side of policing which is our dispatch unit,” says Prince George RCMP Cst. Jennifer Cooper.”

“Our dispatch centre in the North not only dispatches police but fire and ambulance as well. As well as conservation and they monitor the police helicopter and the police fixed-wing plane when they are in the area as well.”

The North District 911 RCMP Dispatch Centre is responsible for police call taking and dispatching for 36 RCMP detachments.

Sharla Duchscherer, a 911 dispatcher and a recruiter says her career choice has been rewarding, especially knowing she has helped many people.

“I started with the North District OCC in 2008, no policing background at all, in my startup year and every day has been a rewarding day at the end of the day. You never know what you’re going to get on the other end of those phone calls. So, I have found my calling.”

These workers provide such a critical service for public safety, and they do it around the clock. They’re a key part of the emergency response network that helps save lives every day.
