PRINCE GEORGE – The Board for the College of New Caledonia has approved a deficit budget of $3,569,000 with no discussion. The Board passed the budget of $77,219,135 in revenues and $80,785,135 in expenses.

“While it is a deficit, it is the result of a lot of work to get the budget in place,” noted Dennis Johnson, CNC President.

Back in February, the Province announced it would allow for deficit budgets at all BC colleges and universities for a year, knowing how the pandemic would impact post-secondary institutions.

The College had to make a number of revisions to get as close to a balanced budget as possible. For instance, “vacant positions and unused budgets were reviewed and reallocated where prudent to do so,” travel savings were realized, and “small decrease in faculty positions due to ongoing trend of low student enrolments in a specific area.” With the budget, the Board has also approved tuition fee increases of two percent for both domestic and international students.
