B.C. to receive 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in May

VANCOUVER — Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 2,174 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. over the weekend, including 60 in the Northern Health region.

That brings the total number of people infected with the virus since the pandemic began to 131,656, of those, 122,518 have recovered.

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 438
  • Fraser Health: 1,509
  • Island Health: 61
  • Interior Health: 106
  • Northern Health: 60

She said there are 7,327 active cases of the virus with 474 people in hospital, 176 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

Sadly, 15 more deaths bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,596. Of those that died, Henry said 14 were over the age of 70. She said the other was a person in their fifties.

Henry added 1 million doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in B.C. by the end of May and believes everyone who is eligible to have a vaccine will have the opportunity to have one before July 1.

A total of 1,877,330 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C. B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix said that makes up 41.5 per cent of those in B.C. eligible to receive a vaccine.
