PRINCE GEORGE – Coach Neil Sedgwick continues to search far and wide to bolster his roster for the upcoming year. Today, the University of Northern British Columbia Women’s Soccer team added a talented midfielder from 7,392 kilometres away, officially announcing the commitment of Tabea Ziemke for the 2021-2022 season.

“I am extremely happy to say I will be playing at the highest level of university sport in Canada. I am honoured that Neil showed interest in me joining the program, as it has always been a dream of mine to play at the university level. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

Due to COVID restrictions, athletes have not been able to make campus visits; whether they live within the province, or across the ocean. A native of Tonisvorst, Germany, the 18-year-old has been in contact with Sedgwick over video throughout the recruiting process, and says UNBC stood out as an ideal fit for her next step.

“I am definitely looking forward to the opportunity to play for UNBC, as well as the general experience of going abroad. Learning and developing, and getting to know the team and the university environment.”

A smooth, intelligent midfielder with an appetite for contact and battles, Ziemke played her club soccer with Borussia Monchengladbach under coach Romeo Schafer. The five-foot-six competitor has seen footage of Timberwolves games and is confident she can adapt to the North American approach to the game.

“I believe, in a way, I might be able to bring a new perspective to the game as an international student. I have a good vision of the pitch, and I like to create spaces for my teammates. I like leading the game from defense to offense.”

Sedgwick’s roster is facing an overhaul, due to the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 moving on from the university and program. He says his newest recruit’s willingness to learn and grow will pay dividends in the years to come.

“I am really excited to welcome Tabea to our program. She is keen to grow and excel. She has built a diverse player skillset as a playmaker from deep, as well as a player who can run in behind. Tabea will bring a different perspective for the game. This experience and her desire to grow as a player will bring challenge daily to the training environment and hopefully will test the opposition in Canada West.”

Ziemke is a graduate of Michael-Ende-Gymnasium school, and intends to enroll in Political Science at UNBC. She will join her new teammates in August for training camp, and is ready to continue a soccer path that started for her when she was six-years-old.

“Of course, it will be an adjustment, as the style of play obviously differs. I am optimistic I will be able to adjust and develop through games and practices, as well as the growing experience over time. I have always loved the game. Especially the team aspect. Supporting each other on and off the pitch.”
