2nd annual suicide awareness walk

PRINCE GEORGE – A Prince George woman is walking across her hometown to create more awareness around suicide. This event is annual and it’s in its second year.

Alysha Carriere is the organizer of the second annual Suicide Awareness Walk. She lost her father Norman Campbell, who was a 60’s scoop survivor on May 26th, 2019, and her friend Laura Weibe, just last year, both to suicide.

” It’s not just a covid pandemic, it’s a pandemic of mental health. People are struggling out there, everyone is so isolated and so alone, they just don’t really have a chance to reach out and to communicate with people,” said Alysha Carriere, event organizer. “So, I don’t know, I just feel like the more attention that we bring to the topic, the more people will be less [sic] anxiety and less scared to reach out and actually say hey, I need some help, I am struggling.”

Not only is this something she created to help honor and remember those she has lost, but also to shine a light on a very dark topic that has affected many people both directly or indirectly.

The event is planned for Wednesday, May 26th, those who are interested in joining are asked to meet at the Tim Hortons on Massey Drive. If you are interested in joining in on the walk, head over to their Facebook page and sign up.

Carriere says, there are about 35 people who have joined so far, which is more than last year’s count.

If you are or anyone you know is suffering, there is help and resources available here in Prince George.
