PRINCE GEORGE – June 6-12 is BC Seniors Week. This week is even more significant as the pandemic has been particularly hard on seniors, Elders, and their families.

They have been disproportionately impacted compared to other demographics. None of us will ever forget the heartbreaking stories and scenes of loss an loneliness of seniors in our community and long term care. – Shirley Bond, MLA

Over 90 per cent of seniors 65 plus still live independently and around 30-40 per cent are still working or volunteering.

Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care, Mable Elmore, released a statement that said:

We understand it is vital that older adults stay independent longer, so our government is making a series of improvements. This includes a recent investment to expand United Way’s Better at Home program, which helps seniors and Elders in more than 260 communities with day-to-day tasks.

The BC Government has also committed to recruiting, training, and hiring up to 3,000 new healthcare workers to better support health care for older adults living in long-term care homes and assisted-living facilities.

The Prince George Council of Seniors says that they have had to adjust as they faced new challenges due to COVID.

We’ve had to move a lot of things that people are used to coming into our office for, to connect by phone or zoom. That is very difficult for seniors as not everyone is computer savvy or able to use zoom or the telephone.

Despite all the challenges, they still have many resources available for our local seniors’ community.
