PG in a boom

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is in the midst of a construction boom and the numbers bear that out. According to the building permit number, a total of 217 permits worth $56 million dollars were issued in the first five months of 2019, which was a record-breaking year. However, there were 210 permits issued in the first five months of this year. The difference? The value of those permits is a whopping $108.9 million. The majority, $59.9 million dollars worth, is for multifamily developments.

“There’s an underlying piece that is so positive and that underlying piece is employment. Trades, labourers,” says Mayor Lyn Hall.

And there are no signs of that growth diminishing, according to industry experts.

“Again we’re using the data from reliable sources. What is called Build Force,” explains Scott Bone, CEO of the Northern Regional Construction Association. “And the numbers and data that’s coming from them are really pointing to a boom in terms of construction, particularly in areas in the North.”

The same source, Build Force, notes that there will likely be 41,000 retirements from the industry over the coming decade and that will require the industry to recruit 59,650 workers.
