PRINCE GEORGE – Naloxone has been a key player in saving lives when it comes to the overdose crisis here in B.C.. Last week it was announced that we hit the 1-million mark when it comes to shipments across our Province since the inception of the “Take Home Naloxone” program in 2012.

Jordan Stewart, who is the Executive Director for The P.O.U.N.D.S Project, says it is a vital instrument when trying to save someone from an overdose.

” Naloxone is an incredibly powerful tool, that gives people the chance to live another day,” Stewart said. ” If we are able to give naloxone to someone who has experienced an overdose, and they live through that event, then have the opportunity to ask for help, to receive help.”

Naloxone has helped The P.O.U.N.D.S Project save over 100 lives since 2019. Since the safe consumption “Two Doors Down” site has reopened, it has been very busy. However, there was a short period of time, where there was a kit shortage, and the organization had to band together to share resources.

There is still so much more to be done. B.C. has seen over 500 deaths so far this year and that number continues to rise. In an interview with CKPG, Minister Malcomson weighed in:

“Far too many people continue to lose their lives to toxic, illicit drugs – it is tragic and unacceptable. Naloxone is an important tool that saves thousands of lives, but we know it is only one of many tools that are needed. B.C. is working from every angle to create a system of care that supports everyone, including expanding access to safer supply, working toward decriminalization, and increasing treatment options. We know there is much more to do and we are making the necessary changes needed to turn this crisis around.”

For anyone who is interested in learning how to administer Naloxone, or even to acquire a kit, you can head to Two Doors Down or any drug store in Prince George.
