PRINCE GEORGE – With the blessing of Council, City Staff have set out a schedule to have civic facilities open for public use.

Beginning tomorrow, more services, such as the sauna, will be open at the Aquatic Centre. As for arenas, Kin 1 and the CN Centre will get ice in August, the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena will get ice in September and the ice will go in at the Elksentre in October.

The Director of Community Services and Public Safety, Adam Davey, runs down why there i a staggered approach to reopening arenas.

“Obviously our demand peaks into the fall and winter when we have men’s Rec league, minor hockey’s up in full swing on top of ringette and figure skating. The other reason, too, is the City maintains seasonal staff. A number of our staff move from Parks and Roads in the summer back to the arenas in the winter.”

Right now the Conference and Civic Centre is being used as a vaccination centre and Northern Health has the facility leased to the end of the year.

“Northern Health does have the lease until the end of the year and, of course, it is the City’s priority to support that. On the other hand, the vaccinations are going well from what we understand. So we hoping to move back into the Civic Centre and have it open to the public in the fall.”

The Aquatic Centre will be closed between September 6th and October 11th for annual maintenance, which will be the last before the BC Summer Games.
