PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Pride Society and City officials kicked off pride week at City Hall, Monday morning.

Mayor Lyn Hall read the Inclusivity Proclamation before the pride flag was raised.

“2SLGBTQI+ citizens are active participants in the Prince George community. Whereas 2SLGBTQI+ citizens are important contributors to the diverse fabric of our city. Whereas 2SLGBTQI+ citizens around the world continue to face significant challenges in pursuit of equality and whereas we recognize the dignity and worth of all people and respect our differences. I now therefore as the Mayor of Prince George proclaim July 4-10 2021 as Pride Week in the City of Prince George,” said Hall.

Hall added that Prince George is a diverse community and this week is significant and needs to be celebrated.

The pride flag was raised to half-mast as all flags in Prince George have been lowered in mourning of the lives lost to residential schools.

President of the Prince George Pride Society, Susan Trabant, says that this week is a celebration for many as well as a way to acknowledge how far communities have come in being more inclusive.

“There are many people in Prince George who are promoting inclusivity. I honestly can’t say enough about Prince George businesses that are too, right on board in celebrating pride. And that they are operating inclusive businesses that everyone knows that they are welcome,” said Trabant.

She continued to say that she hopes that communities continue to celebrate differences in the future. The society will be hosting events throughout the week and encourages the community to partake.

Prince George pride week runs until July 10, 2021.
