PRINCE GEORGE–The recent high temperatures and now the smokey skies from wildfires has driven up demands for fans, air conditioners, and now air purifiers. Which has become a struggle for stores, leaving many customers empty-handed.

“First it was ACs, then it was 159 fans in one day, and now a few air purifiers. We were answering phone calls yesterday and last week. Like 200 phone calls a day ‘do you have fans?’, ‘do you have ACs?’, and now it’ll be ‘Do you have purifiers?’ ” said Richard Bundock, Store Manager, Central Buildings Home Hardware.

Across the city, many stores are in the same situation: a lot of demand and not enough supply.

“Even our replacement filters, they’re all disappearing really fast.” said Bundock.

Smoke from the wildfire combined with the recent hot temperatures has turned fans, ac’s and now air purifiers into the hottest products in stores.

“Fans and air conditioners of course in the past few weeks have been very very popular and we continue to have lots coming in on a daily basis, working to keep customers happy,. But definitely with the forest fire situation getting pretty tough with the smell of smoke in the air as you get up in the morning.” said David Shuvera, General Manager, Canadian Tire.

Even stores that don’t primarily sell those appliances are seeing the products come off the shelves as quickly as they’re placed.

“We haven’t been that big for us cause we’re a lumber store and we’ve already sold twice as much as last year. The problem that we’re having is we draw from a distribution centre in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and we’re one of 400 stores that do that. They’re getting their inventory just as as we are and it’s taking a little while to play catch up. Like some of those things won’t be available til August.” said Bundock.

Around the clock, stores have been talking with distributors trying to get as many products on their shelves as quickly as possible.

“It’s gonna be tough to fill significant quantities of orders.” said Shuvera.

Only a few weeks into the summer and the wildfire season, stores are gearing up for what’s looking to be a long few months.
