$1,000 for every stitch: the fundraising goal from a Prince George father and son

PRINCE GEORGE–A thousand dollars for every stitch. That’s the goal a Prince George father and son are aiming for in raising money for the BC Children’s Hospital.

The saying goes that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. For Rajinder Sharma and his son Sunjai, they’re taking that to the next level.

“It feels great, we’re not just doing this for ourselves. It always feels good to support someone.” said Sunaji

11-year-old Sunjai and his dad have spent the last eight years raising money for the BC Children’s hospital. Collecting and taking in donations of cans and bottles to give back whatever they can.

They’ve also sold chocolate bars, held lemonade stands and sold stickers.

“People will just text once a month, once a week, depending on the time. Christmas time, January, February, people generally drink a little bit less. But consistently, like two or three stops a week. Different people, some people just once a month.” said Rajinder.

Sunjai was born with sagittal synostosis. A condition where his skull prematurely fused at the top of his head, causing an abnormal head shape and restricting proper brain growth.

One surgery and 57 stitches later, Sunjai was back to living a normal life, but he wanted to find a way to give back.

So Sunjai and his dad came up with a goal: $1,000 for every stitch he was given. So far, they’ve raised nearly $56,000

“I think since 3 [is when] he started, selling chocolate and stuff. So we’ve been chipping away at our total since then, now we’re getting close to the end. Well close to the target, it doesn’t mean we’ll stop.” said Rajinder.

The father and son say this is the best gift they could give to the hospital for saving Sunjai and letting him live a normal life. They want to be able to give other kids that same chance as well.

If you would like to help reach their goal you can donate cans and bottles in their name or donate directly to their GoFundMe page.

Cans and bottles can be donated to the PG Recycling and Return-it Centre under account number #7783497865 and at Nechako Bottle Depot under account #317.
