PRINCE GEORGE – In exactly one year, Prince George will welcome close to 37-hundred participants for the 32nd BC Summer Games. For three days, the city will be alive with high-performance athletic activity as youth aged 10 to 18 participate in 18 sports, including sports for athletes with disabilities.

“I just am so excited that we are having a Games,” said Alison Noble, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. “The last summer games were cancelled because of the pandemic. The fact that we can hold a Games in an incredible community like Prince George and invite the athletes back where they missed out [last year]. It will be really nice to have an opportunity to compete and meet others from across the province, which it was a real shame that didn’t happen.”

This morning, an event was held at the Prince George Aquatic Centre to celebrate the one-year countdown to next year’s games, which will not only represent a rebound for the city following the pandemic but also bring the return of the games.

“This event is very exciting,” said Selen Alpey, Vice President for the 2022 BC Summer Games. “There are so many people that want to be involved. We’re looking for 3,000 volunteers. I’m sure we’re going to surpass that. We invite every one of them to participate with us because it is a community event. It certainly showcases Prince George and the North, and what we can do.”

Alpey admits this will be the event that will aid in the City’s economic rebound a year from now.

Coming out of the pandemic, the BC Summer Games will give Prince George that opportunity to re-establish itself as a prominent community on the sports map, especially after successes with the 2015 Canada Winter Games and the 2019 World Para-Nordic Skiing Championships.

“The BC Games are a beautiful blend of community and sports development. It allows that community to showcase themselves to the rest of the province, volunteers are trained and enjoy the experience, and the athletes come and have a fabulous time at the same moment they’re competing and wanting to do their personal best. It’s a beautiful combination and I think Prince George is primed and ready to go.”
