Wet weather leads to lifting of evacuation alert

PRINCE GEORGE — Update: (6 p.m.)The RDBN , and Takla Nation Band Council have rescinded the evacuation order for the Mount Porter wildfire.

They have instead expanded an evacuation alert for the fire for the following areas:

encompassing Wolverine Lakes, Manson Lakes and the Omineca Mining Access Road located in Electoral Area ‘C’ (Fort St. James Rural), northwest of Germansen Landing and southeast of Manson Creek, as shown on the map below.

Earlier: (2 p.m.) With help from Mother Nature, the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) has lifted its evacuation alert for the Camsell Lake wildfire west of Fort St. James.

An evacuation order was issued last week due to an increase in wildfire behaviour but the recent cool and wet weather has meant things have changed and the alert has been rescinded. The Prince George Fire Centre says the change in the weather has been a big help elsewhere too.

“Last night’s cooler weather and precipitation was beneficial across the fire centre,” says Fire Information Officer Hannah Harris. “As of last night, the Cutoff Creek fire status has been updated from out-of-control to being held.”

The Shesta Lake fires that were south of Prince George are both out and the Punchaw Lake fire is now being held at 21.4 hectares.

As for the outlook, Harris says limited resources across our fire centre and the entire province continue to be a concern.

“We are expecting some windy days. Unlike the south, our windy days will be accompanied by cool temperatures, rain and increased humidity.”
