Positive takeaways despite cancellation of Canadian Masters Badminton Championships

PRINCE GEORGE – The Canadian Masters’ Badminton Championships will not be coming to Prince George.

After being awarded the tournament back in August of 2017, the event was set to held in Prince George in 2020, only to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That postponement was then set to see the tournament played in April of 2021, only to be completely cancelled.

It was a tough decision for Board Chair Lisa Davison, especially after spending several years working to bring in funding for an event that was estimated to generate $760,000 for the city.

Making the bid in 2016, Davison said it was a lot of work to bring in funding for an event that initially started with zero dollars in startup. Yet the event itself was budgeted to cost $150,000.

Despite the cancellation, Davison is urging future event organizers to make use of the resources here locally, especially Tourism PG, who made Davison aware of several grant opportunities to aid in shrinking the overhead costs.

In the three years leading up to the tournament, they were able to secure startup funding from the City of Prince George, as well as marketing funds from the Northern Development Initiative Development Trust.

“That allowed us to create two promotional videos by a local company here in town, and we were also able to create a promotional pamphlet that we actually launched and distributed both of those at the 2019 championship,” said Davison.

The organizing committee also received funding from both the Province and Federal Governments.

While the event won’t be taking place in Prince George anytime soon, Davison says there was a lot of positive takeaways. The assistance from Tourism PG brought forth funding opportunities that Davison wouldn’t have otherwise known about.

“Those takeaways would be to use that planning time, work with Tourism Prince George [because] they’re on the pulse of other events going on in town.”
