PRINCE GEORGE – A group of three left Whitehorse on June 26th, meeting with other First Nations as they walked down Highway 37, picking up more walkers along the way. Today, upon arrival in Prince George, their number is now 16.

The Warriors Walk for Healing Nations is walking to Kamloops to honour the 215 children found in unmarked graves at a residential school in that community.

“We wanted to help to bring awareness,” explains Jackie Shorty with the Northern Nations Alliance. “One of the things that we’re very adamant about is that we want to raise awareness and that we ensure that this truth that has come forward with the 215 children and the growing numbers is not swept under the rug.”

She says, during the month-long journey, they have heard many stories of the residential school experience and believes the walk is helping with the healing process.

“Truthfully, as indigenous peoples, we have endured genocide for many, many years. Every community that we have visited has shared their personal stories and all of them are very painful stories.”

The group will resume their journey on Thursday and hope to reach Kamloops by August.
