PRINCE GEORGE – Trading likes for injuries, BC Hydro released a report showing a shocking increase in people trespassing in dangerous areas for the perfect selfie.

The ‘Living Over the Edge Report’ showed that over the past five years, BC Hydro has recorded a 200% increase in trespassing incidents at dams, reservoirs, and recreations sites.

The most daring of British Columbians have stood on the edge of a cliff, disobeyed safety signage, trespassed, or even gone to dangerous heights all for a selfie.

And that is not just recreational sites, there has also been a rise in public safety incidents involving transmission towers and other interference with its electrical systems.

These incidents have resulted in some very serious injuries. Approximately two percent or 80,000 people in British Columbia have admitted to injuring themselves while trying to get a picture or video.

BC Hydro is urging adventures to obey warning signage and to keep out of fenced, gated, or restricted areas. They are also asking people to stay clear of dams, powerhouses, power lines, and all electrical equipment. If you are out hiking, stay on the designated trail, and when swimming to not go out of bounds.
