PRINCE GEORGE – Janice Merwin, a local Prince George woman, has been making teddy bears for almost a decade.

“My first teddy bear was made in memory of my sister-in-law Cathy, made out of her mink coat. For nine years now I have made teddy bears and they are all over the world to my friends, family, and internet friends,” said Merwin.

Her bears are also spread throughout the local community.

“I can’t keep them all so I walk the streets and give them to people. I have given them to doctors in the hospital, ambulance drivers, and police officers. I feel good when I make someone happy,” added Merwin.

Janice’s artistic path began at a young age when she started making her own toys.

“I didn’t have anything as a kid because we were poor, so I liked to create things so I started making dolls, barbie dolls, and crocheted,” said Merwin.

She doesn’t do it all alone though, her husband of 50 years is often the behind-the-scenes help in bringing these bears to life.

“Larry, when I get some of the material especially the fur coats, he cuts them up and pulls apart the seams. He’s my helper and I couldn’t have done it without him,” said Merwin.

Janice says that she plans to keep making teddy bears until she runs out of fabric, or until she can’t anymore.
