PRINCE GEORGE—COVID cases across the province has steadily begun to rises again following the August long weekend. However, even as step 4 of the BC Restart Plan nears, new data from the BC Centre for Diseases Control shows that the Delta variant is leading in COVID cases.

In a report published last week, between the week of July 25th to July 31st, the agency found that in 1,488 cases in the province, 95% were of the delta variant. Northern Health had 39 cases, and 79% were of the Delta variant.

Alpha, Beta, and Gamma variant cases have been steadily dropping. The Delta variant was first discovered in British Columbia in April and overtook as the dominant variant in July.

The BCCDC says that the variant spreads more rapidly and can lead to more severe symptoms.

Althought it’s has a higher transmission rate, the agency says people who are vaccinated make-up a small percentage of total cases.

In another report, the BCCDC gathered data between June 24th to July 24th and found that of the 1,683 cases, only 6% were cases from those who were fully vaccinated.

30% of the cases were from people who had only one dose or received their second dose less than week before the case was reported.

64% of the cases were from people who were unvaccinated.

The next weekly report from the BCCDC is expected to be released this Friday which will include data from the August long weekend.
