Mandatory masks in seniors care homes

PRINCE GEORGE – Because of the number of variants turning up on long term care facilities, transmitted primarily by people who are not fully vaccinated, the Provincial Health Office has issued new health orders.

“We are announcing mandatory vaccination as a condition of employment for all workers in long-term and seniors assisted living,” explained Dr. Bonnie Henry, BC’s Provincial Health Officer. “This will apply to all licenced facilities, whether they are private or health authority owned and operated or contracted facilities.”

That will pertain to ALL workers in long-term care and seniors care facilities, from nursing staff to cleaning staff. Staff will be required to be fully vaccinated by October 12th. Effective immediately, those who are not fully vaccinated will be required to wear a mask and will be regularly tested. Also, only those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to volunteer in those facilities. But Health Minister Adrian Diz was asked about visitors. His response was short a d to the point.

“It’s our expectation that people will be vaccinated,” says Health Minister Adrian Dix, suggesting measures will be taken “to ensure people are protected.”

This order, while it applies to long-term care facilities, Dr. Henry alluded to more.

“The reporting requirements that are part of this order will apply to health care workers outside of long-term care and assisted living. So in acute care and community care and we will be working with health authorities and unions in determining our path forward for all health care workers in the coming weeks.”

In 2019, a regulation requiring nurses to get a flu shot or wear a mask was axed, with health care unions arguing it was “best to let nurses use their professional judgement” when it comes to getting the vaccine.
