Pine River fire continues to see minimal fire activity

PRINCE GEORGE – A fire that exploded in size on Friday afternoon continues to show minimal fire activity in the Pine Pass along Highway 97.

The Pine River Fire (G72591) has burned at least 2,542 hectares as of Monday afternoon and does not pose any threat to Powder King, Chetwynd, or Mackenzie.

The fire was labeled as ‘human-caused on Friday night.

Several structures were lost on Friday as the fire showed aggressive fire behavior, since then no additional structures have been lost.

“Yesterday, we did receive quite a significant amount of precipitation, so continuing into today we have seen low fire activity,” said Alex Lane, spokesperson for the BC Wildfire Service.

There are currently five firefighters along with air support assigned to the fire down from the 10 assigned to the fire on Friday.

According to the BCWS, the number assigned to the incident could change in the days ahead.

Highway 97 between Hasler Road and Powder King Road was closed for nearly 24 hours between starting Friday into Saturday afternoon, but has since re-opened.
