PRINCE GEORGE – Masich Place Stadium will be the site of something it hasn’t seen in a long time this weekend.

The Prince George Gnats Rugby Club will be putting on a tournament in the city, welcoming players from a number of communities within the Central Interior and Northern regions of the province.

“Right now, we know for sure Terrace, Prince Rupert, Williams Lake and the Northern Peace Region, so essentially Dawson Creek will be sending players down,” said Jake Saunders, a member of the Gnats. “We’re hoping to have five teams and us, which puts us at six. From the weekend, we’re really hoping to open the communities eyes to the world of rugby.”

For 45 years, the Prince George Gnats have been established as the city’s team competing as a 3rd division rugby union club in BC’s Central Interior Rugby Union.

“We are renowned for playing very physical, very hard rugby. We are the physical team, that’s our reputation,” explained Saunders. “That has always what it has been, we’ve been known as the team from Prince George to have big physical players that aren’t afraid of contact.”

Saunders says while he loves the game of rugby and its physicality, he thoroughly enjoys the social aspect the Gnats provide their players.

“Realistically, it’s a really good bonding experience. It’s a really awesome way to be social. You meet a lot of really good people.”

The tournament will be taking place on Saturday with the Gnats starting the day’s events with a league tilt against Williams Lake on the natural grass fields adjacent to the stadium before shifting to the turf field for the remainder of the game.

Prince George and Williams Lake will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the lower PGSS grass fields. Games will then shift to the turf field at Masich Place for the duration of the one-day tournament.

Saunders says the concession stand will be fully certified and staffed to fulfil spectators appetites, as well as a fully licenced beer garden on-site, which Saunders admits he’s looking forward to himself.
