City to review work zone policies

PRINCE GEORGE – The city is growing and the building stats prove it. It means plenty of construction zones for traffic to contend with. And it isn’t just the traffic of the four-wheeled variety.

It’s the reason the Advisory Accessibility Committee went before council with a special request to “review existing City policies, procedures, and permitting processes regarding accessibility of safe pedestrian access to the pedestrian network in work zones to ensure the City aligns with best practices in promoting pedestrian safety and accommodation in work zones.”

“Our first step was to ask City Staff to provide us with information about the policies were,” explains Chris Gobbi, Chair of the Accessibility Committee.

But, as was noted by City Councillor and Committee member, Susan Scott, most people think of physical impairment when they hear the word “disability.” There are many different kinds of disabilities, such as visual impairment.

“For example, if I’m walking about on a sidewalk, and I can’t discern where the sidewalk ends or the curb ends, I’m going to be on the ground.”

And City Administration will be, as requested by Council, will return a report about the current policies at a later date.
