Concerns mount as return to school nears

PRINCE GEORGE – As excitement for the return to school builds, concerns from several groups and parents are starting to build as well.

President of the BC Teachers Federation, Teri Mooring says she has concerns about the safety plans in place to start the year.

Mooring says asking some kids to wear face masks and others not to doesn’t make any sense as the delta variant of COVID-19 spreads across the province.

“We just don’t know what that’s going to look like in schools, we know what’s happening in other jurisdictions and that’s quite concerning,” says Mooring.

Right now the province has only mandated students in Grade 4 and up must wear face masks, while Kindergarten to Grade 3 don’t have to, even though masks are still strongly recommended.

Education critic Jackie Tegart says the concerns don’t end there though, similar to the BCTF the opposition wonders why proper ventilation upgrades still haven’t been complete at schools.

Tegart says money from the Federal Government funded ventilation upgrades last year, although details on air quality within schools, and the status of their HVAC systems is not being shared by the government.

Other concerns from critics include the lack of a hybrid model, a serious lack of social distancing inside schools, and the complete stoppage of COVID-19 exposure notifications the way they were done last year.
