BC Wildfire Services asking the public to stay alert during long weekend

Sep 3, 2021 | 4:49 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – As we head into the last long weekend of summer, BC Wildfire Services is once again reminding people to be smart when it comes to fire activity.

Wildfire season is not over yet, as there are still over 200 wildfires burning throughout the province. Over 1500 fires have burned throughout B.C. since April, and of those over 30% were human-caused.

“Our wildfire crews still have significant work ahead of them to bring existing wildfires under control as they work to keep British Columbians safe. Let’s not add human-caused fires to their workload during this long and challenging fire season,” said Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Katrine Conroy in a statement.

Campfires are currently allowed in the: Prince George Fire Centre, Northwest Fire Centre, Cariboo Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre (except the Boundary Fire Zone), Haida Gwaii, and the Central Coast area within the Coastal Fire Centre

If you do decide to have a campfire there are still regulations that must be met. Campfires cannot be larger than 0.5 m in height and 0.5 m in width. You must have access to at least eight litres of water and a hand tool (ie. shovel) to properly extinguish your fire. Officials are also asking that you do not leave your fire unattended.

As always, if you see any suspicious fire activity, report it immediately to emergency services.
