PRINCE GEORGE – It was a chance for 2Close2Home to not only get their opposition to the West Coast Olefins petrochemical project across to Council, but also the larger audience who was tuned into the meeting last night.

“This will change the town back to what it was in the 60’s, which was a dirty industry town,” says Dr. Annie Booth, one of the three presenters last night.

Dr. Marie Hay outlined a very dire picture of the health repercussions. They say the research shows increases in cancer in workers in petrochemical plants due to heavy metals, increased incidents of asthma and ear, nose, and throat conditions, and significant impacts on reproductive systems.

And Dr. Booth says those are the health impacts. There are very specific economic impacts.

“West Coast Olefins has been very clever. They split up their projects. Here’s Pineview and here’s the two in the BCR Site. But they’re not really related. So we’re going to go through three separate proposals, one or two of which are under less heavy scrutiny.”

2Close2Home is seeking an independent review of the project in its entirety and the City has a “moral and ethical imperative” to hold a comprehensive public engagement on the project as a whole. Those two requests have prompted Council to give staff some direction.

“We asked staff to take a look at the recommendation that was brought forward by the three doctors, to review that recommendation and come back to [Council] with a report on what impacts the recommendations would have,” explains Mayor Lyn Hall. “A little bit of background on the recommendation. That kind of thing.”

He also suggested the trio take their presentation to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.
