More money approved to demo the pool and fire hall

PRINCE GEORGE – With plenty of discussions, additional funds were committed to demolishing the Four Seasons Leisure Pool and Fire Hall #1. But the vote was not unanimous.

There is history with this story.

When the City went to referendum for the new pool, approval was given to borrow $35 million to build a new pool, with another seven million dollars set aside to buy the Days Inn, demolish the Days Inn as well as demolish the Four Seasons Leisure Pool. However, when the demolition of the hotel began, there were several “surprises.” Additional concrete removal, which appeared to be used as fill as opposed to gravel, added $285,900 to the bill. The concrete grout contained asbestos and special health and safety measures had to be introduced at a cost of $537,350 and sporadic vermiculite was found throughout the building at a cost of $172,330.

However, that left only $547,515 to demolish the pool. As such, Council was asked to approve an additional $2,557,485 for tear down the pool.

However, Councillor Kyle Sampson opposed the additional dollars, saying he “struggled to approve the mistakes in the past.”

Councillor Cori Ramsay also expressed disappointment, but wanted to assure the public that “the really badly-paved road that the City is on is being fixed.”

With Council’s approval, the pool demolition Request for Proposals will go out in the next 60 days, with work to get underway in the spring.

However, with dispatch still in the old fire hall, that demolition will likely not get underway until next fall.

Two other items were discussed: the fate of the Centennial Mosaic. Administration recommended, and Council approved, demolition of the mosaic, but not before high-definition images are captured. Where those images will be displayed is the next question. Also, the City will be working with the community to find a new location for the Terry Fox statue.
