PRINCE GEORGE – The Vancouver Giants stood tall Wednesday night, scoring three times on the power-play as they came away with a 5-3 victory over the Prince George Cougars at the CN Centre.

The Cougars took down the Giants Tuesday night in a 1-0 outing to snap a three-game losing streak they found themselves on after winning five consecutive games against the Victoria Royals.

Tyler Brennan got the start again in net for the Cougars Wednesday night after his 27-save shutout performance the night before. Jesper Vikman manned the pipes for Vancouver.

Vancouver got the scoring underway past the midway mark of the opening period, and they did in bunches.

Following a penalty to Liekit Reichle for charging, Ty Halaburda went top shelf on Brennan from close-range for the power-play goal and his second of the season. Jaden Lipinski and Connor Horning were credited with assists on the play.

Just over a minute later, Alex Cotton tallied his fifth of the season to get the Giants some early cushion. Justin Sourdif and Adam Hall assisted on the goal.

Just ahead of a two-minute mark, after another quick opportunity from Caden Brown was denied, Brown sent Craig Armstrong in on a breakaway. Fighting off a Giants’ player on his tail, the 18-year-old put the puck in past Vikman to get the Cougars on the board.

At the end of the opening period, the Giants held the lead both on the scoreboard and in the shots department, outshooting the Cougars 14-10.

In the second period, a delayed call had the Giants with the man-advantage in the attacking zone as referee Brett Iverson’s arm was up. A scramble in front of the net ended with Connor Horning potting the puck to put the Giants ahead 3-1.

Just a few minutes later, Prince George got one back. With the puck sent into the corner to the left of Vikman, the Giants defence left Caden Brown all alone in front of the net.

A few seconds later on the clock, Jaren Brinson was sent off with a five-minute major for fighting and a game misconduct.

Vancouver then capitalized with a pair of goals from Adam Hall. The goals came less than two minutes apart as pushed the Giants ahead 5-2. Both goals came on the power-play.

Cougars’ defenceman Bauer Dumanski scored his first in the WHL at 12:11 of the second period to cut into the Giants lead.

The second period closed out with the Giants having another strong performance shooting, putting 15 shots on Brennan while the Cougars mustered up eight.

In the third period, the Cougars couldn’t find the back of the net, despite outshooting the Giants 12-9 in an effort to come back.

Tyler Brennan faced 38 shots in total, turning away 33 of them. The night marked the most shots the 18-year-old has faced in his eight games played, as well as the most saves.

Jesper Vikman stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced.

The Cougars fall to a 6-7 record while the Giants improve to 7-3-1.

Prince George will be back on the ice Friday night when they welcome the Kelowna Rockets to the CN Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
