Empty grocery shelves all over Prince George, due to panic buyers

PRINCE GEORGE – It began with the pandemic, it happened again when we saw fires and now, BC is dealing with winter flooding that’s destroyed homes and taken out large chunks of highways that have cut off access to the Lower Mainland.

This has now caused people to panic buy all over the province, including right here in Prince George. The Provincial Government called yet another state of emergency this afternoon, the third in just under a year.

“I spoke to Prime Minister Trudeau, he offered to supply assistance where needed to help us respond to the immediate disaster. As well as working with communities to rebuild,” said Premier John Horgan at a press conference Wednesday. “Please do not hoard items, what you need is what your neighbors need as well,” he added.

A message that seems to have come too late here in Prince George. Social Media quickly filled with pictures of empty shelves from major grocery stores all over the city.

Major highways may be cut off, but that doesn’t mean the North is also cut off. A majority of our shipments come from Alberta and many other trucks have already been rerouted.

Those who are unable to gather items, like people on Disability, and Old Age Security, were met with disappointment this morning.

Sources say there will be shipments to both Save on Foods and Superstore by tonight or tomorrow.
