Children COVID shots anticipated

PRINCE GEORGE – It is anticipated that Health Canada has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine for children between the ages of five to 11 tomorrow.

“This is a version that is designed specifically for children,” explains Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer for BC. “It is a small dose. About 10 milligrams. And that will mean less pain and discomfort with the shot. This is tailored to the immune systems of younger children.”

There are 300,000 children in that age bracket and Dr. Henry assures enough of the vaccine will come to BC.

“The important information that follows from a government perspective will look at how will that be rolled out? How will that vaccination process unfold?,” says Shirley Bond, Interim Opposition Leader. “We certainly hope that there is thought given to the mechanism to ensuring that children between the ages of five and 12 have the opportunity to be vaccinated.”

Health officials are encouraging parents to register their children so that they would be likely to get the vaccine before the holidays.

“Vaccinating children in the younger age group will not be mandatory,” says Dr. Henry. “But it will give your children as much protection as possible. The best path to immunity is not illness, it is through immunization.”

She also encourages parents to access information about the vaccine from the BC Centre for Disease Control or #itdoesnothavetohurt
