PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Cougars made two selections in the 2021 WHL U.S. Priority Draft Wednesday, selecting defenceman Yoonho (Roy) Chung and forward Nick McLennan.

Chung was selected in the 1st round, 4th overall by the Cougars. He is a dual citizen between the United States and South Korea, and was chosen from the LA Jr. Kings 15’s program in California. The six-foot, 160-pound defenceman is second in team scoring with 29 points (6 goals, 23 assists) in 45 games. Chung was originally a forward and only made the switch to the blue-line this season.

“Roy has only played hockey four years but has tremendous upside. He is a real student of the game and a strong skater who is developing rapidly,” said Cougars’ Director of Scouting Bob Simmonds.

In the 2nd round, Prince George selected Nick McLennan with the 41st pick. McLennan is originally from Edmonton, Alberta, but now calls Anchorage, Alaska home. The forward plays for Team Alaska 15U AAA. Last season, with Team Alaska’s 14U AAA program, McLennan put up 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists) in 32 games. This season, he has played in 23 games and has 3 goals and 6 assists. He also has 62 penalty minutes.

“Nick plays a hard game, and he is really physical; he’s strong on pucks. He’s a raw talent but has a heavy shot and his game has lots of room to grow,” said Simmonds.

Players eligible for the 2021 WHL U.S. Priority Draft are 2006-born players who reside in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
