Kmec named to Slovakia World Junior Selection Camp roster

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Cougars will have some representation at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship later this month.

2004-born defenceman Viliam Kmec has been named to Slovakia’s preliminary roster.

Kmec is one of 31 players named to Slovakia’s camp roster and he will join the team after Tuesday’s game against the Vancouver Giants. Slovakia’s North American based camp opens on Saturday, December 18 in Edmonton, AB.

Kmec is sixth in team scoring with 12 points (2g-10a) in 24 regular season games. The product of Košice, SVK is the Cougars’ third-highest scoring defenceman behind Hudson Thornton and Ethan Samson. The 17-year-old was selected by Prince George in the second round, 104th overall, in the 2021 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

Kmec has previous international experience, as he helped Slovakia win their first ever silver medal at the 2021 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in August. Kmec has a long history playing with Slovakia’s Under 16 and Under 18 programs.

The 2022 World Junior Hockey Championship, cohosted in Edmonton and Red Deer, AB, opens on Dec 26th and runs through to Jan 5th. Slovakia is in Group B with Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Slovakia opens their tournament on Boxing Day against the U.S.
