Benzo contamination causes overdose alert for Northern BC

Jan 6, 2022 | 1:13 PM

NORTHERN BC- Northern Health has issued an overdose alert for Northern BC following an increase in overdose events. The health authority says the events are stemming from a substance sold as down. They are highly toxic substances that may be contaminated with benzodiazepines (benzos). The substances are said to require more naloxone to reverse the effects, which include heavy and prolonged sedation.

One of the first signs of an overdose is choking, gurgling or snoring sounds, according to Northern Health. Residents are being advised to get overdose prevention, recognition, and response training; carry naloxone.

Anyone that does use illicit substances should never use it alone, and anyone that does can download the Lifeguard or BeSafe app available free on the app store or on Toward the Heart website, or call 1-888-688-6677. Northern Health reminds users to know and respect their tolerance, don’t mix it with other drugs or alcohol and to test a small amount first.
