Jan 12, 2022 | 4:10 PM

NORTHERN BC- Journalists across the province have the opportunity to apply for the new Lieutenant Governer’s BC Journalism Fellowship. Starting in 2022, eligible journalist(s) can receive up to $25,000 yearly. These funds can be used to spend on 2-4 months on research and production of a project that covers an issue significant to British Columbians. The project will then be published/broadcasted by a committed publishing source.

“In the spirit of supporting a heathy democracy with a thriving journalistic community, this fellowship will encourage the development and support of local journalists in British Columbia,” stated Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of BC.

Applicants must be journalists based out of BC with at least three years of experience, and currently working full-time or freelance. Teams of journalists can also apply and all applicants must receive a letter of support from a publishing source to confirm the work can be published upon its completion.

The jury is comprised of members of the Jack Webster Foundation’s Board of Directors, members of the Government House Foundation and members who have contributed to advancing the public interest. All five jurors will be assessing applicants on the following:

  • the journalist applying for the fellowship, their background, experience;
  • the subject matter to be covered, including relevance to British Columbians, the unique nature of the project, its potential impact, importance, and ability to fill a knowledge gap on a matter of significance to the people of British Columbia;
  • why the topic’s complexity requires deep-dive storytelling to support a better-informed public;
  • the quality and audience reach of media outlet(s) that will publish or broadcast the work;
  • the diversity of research materials, interview subjects and sources used for the project;
  • does the project represent good value for the funds invested?

Applications are being accepted online from today (January 12) until February 28. The recipients will be announced in the springtime. More information on the Lieutenant Governer’s BC Journalism Fellowship can be found on the Jack Webster Foundation website.
