New Trustees ready to go

PRINCE GEORGE – The last time a Board was sworn in at School District 57 was November 2019. But the composition of that Board will change at the end of the month. That’s because there will be two new faces at it.

One of them is Milton Mahoney, who took 293 of the 1,137 votes, something that surprised him.

“The other candidates, they had just the same platform, really, if you break it down,” he explains. “They all want transparency.”

That seat was left vacant when Trent Derrick stepped down after a controversial report was released identifying systemic racism within the district. Rachael Weber won the seat in Mackenzie, left vacant when Shuirose Valimohamed also left at the same time. Weber outlines one of the issues she’s like to tackle right away.

“I think our first order of business is really making sure that we have a superintendent, not an acting superintendent. I think that role needs to be filled as soon as possible.”

She, too, identified transparency as something the Board needs to address.

“Transparency has always been an issue for School District 57,” she says. “We know this because of the report that came out from Minister Whiteside. “We know there have been issues. The First Nations have been screaming about this for years.”Nobody has listened until the report came out.”

She says it’s time for the District to begin tackling the recommendations set out in Special Advisor’s report.

We asked Mahoney if he believed he would be fighting an uphill battle in attempting to make the district more transparent.

“You think?! I think I do. I know I’ve got an uphill battle.”

The new trustees will be sworn in at the January 25th Board meeting.
