PRINCE GEORGE – Tensions have soared recently in eastern Europe, as the United States and its NATO allies express concern about a buildup of about 100,000 Russian troops near the Ukraine border.

It has many worried about a potential Russian invasion. As a result, Canada has expanded its training mission in Ukraine and is promising non-lethal aid.

Andrii Chornenkyii is Saint George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church priest in Prince George. He and his parishioners continue to pray for peace in his home country of Ukraine.

According to CNC political science instructor Chris Beach, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is trying to reassert control of Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the crisis, Canada has led international support for the people of Ukraine. Canada has one of the largest populations of Ukrainian immigrants, with the majority living in the prairie provinces.

Chornenkyii is in contact with his family in Ukraine and says some have experienced cyber-attacks.

The US and NATO have made no concessions to the main Russian demands to resolve the crisis over Ukraine. Those include giving Moscow a guarantee that its neighbour can never join the Western alliance. The focus is now on how Russia will respond.
