SD57 Superintendent situation top of mind for new Trustees

PRINCE GEORGE – Earlier this week both Milton Mahoney and Rachael Weber were officially inaugurated as School Trustees onto the School District 57 Board of Education.

Mahoney and Weber will join the school board for a short term with the general election set for October. although both have many key tasks to try and tackle in the limited meetings.

One common task among the pair is the SD57 Superintendent situation.

“Six Superintendents in six years, I have got the answer, I know why,” said Mahoney. “The final piece of the puzzle has to come from this board, it has to come from them and made public.”

Mahoney said it will be “dicey” dealing with a personnel matter out of an in-camera meeting although he thinks it should be done.

Weber said she hopes to have a Superintendent in place that is permanent and not acting.

Acting Superintendent Cindy Heitman has been in that role since December 2020, when Anita Richardson left on leave from School District 57.

It is still unclear what type of leave Richardson is on or if that may end at any point.

Jennifer Whiteside, BC Minister of Education was asked in a previous interview with CKPG News if she was concerned about Richardson’s leave.

Whiteside danced around answering the question but did note that consistent leadership was important to a significant culture change.

Consistent leadership has been something hard to find for SD57, the recent special advisors report called the senior leadership “a revolving door.”

Since 2015 the district has had five Superintendents.
